Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tom’s Vintage Lamp Repair work on antique, foreign and gas lamps?
We do not discriminate and will repair, convert or restore just about any lamp from anywhere in the world. In fact, we are one of only a few craftsmen who will work with lamps originally made outside the United States. Please give us a call so we can discuss the project.

Can Tom’s Vintage Lamp Repair modify or convert an old gas, oil or kerosene lamp to electric?
We are old hands (excuse the pun) at converting oil, gas and kerosene lighting fixtures and lamps for modern electricity. It’s a privilege to work on these old beauties and we take great satisfaction in knowing you will enjoy your new light for years to come.

I have an objet d’art my son made in grade school. Can it be made into a lamp?
Any number of different things can be converted to become a table, hanging or floor lamp. We have worked with some unusual objects like a tree stump, a wire sculpture and a teapot and teacup set chandelier. You can get more information on this question like this. Go to the top menu, select services and then mouse over (I love that phrase) to the dropdown menu and click on Custom Lamps. Or you can click on these words.

Why do you want me to call before shipping a lamp that needs repair or restoration? It is only fair and right that you know upfront what your costs will be. Therefore, it would be foolish to estimate anything without knowing about the lamp, it’s condition and what you would like the outcome to be. Most of the time, for most lamps, this will be somewhere around an hour’s work plus whatever parts and wiring materials will be involved. Of course, there will be exceptions.

What sort of guarantee do I have?
You have my word. If that’s not good enough, I understand. You need more information. To start with, I’ve been fixing things all my life, and specifically fixing lamps, for over 10 years. I’ve never had an unsatisfied customer. I’ve never caused a fire due to faulty wiring. No one has ever received a shock from one of my lamps or lighting fixtures. “My lamps” (the ones I repair or restore) grace homes of all sizes and RVs that tend to need a truck to pull’em. Also, my customers say good things about me. Check it out here under testimonials. You can read about my thoughts on security & privacy by clicking on the underlined words you just read.

Do you take credit cards?
We can take your payment in almost any way you want. MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover and even an old-fashioned check will do. If paying by check, we will retain the lamp until the check has cleared. It’s unfortunate we had to institute this, don’t you agree?
